After a local tree was felled I chainsawed sections of its trunk down the middle to remove the centre pith and wrapped the pieces in film until I could begin work on each piece. A process of “spalting” adds colour to the wet timber that is fixed once the piece is turned and dries.

One never knows what the process will deliver, but it is always interesting to see the inside of the tree for the very first time. The result in this case is a tactile and interesting form that could be put to use as a salad bowl or simply sit on display, showing off the beauty of a common place tree.
